So I wrote here last that my dream vehicle for this crazy road-trip that Steve and I are embarking on would be a VW bus. Well last week we made the decision that we weren’t going to settle for anything less than the dream – so we’re looking into VW buses!
The perfect one seems to be the Westfalia. It has a pop-up roof with a double bed, and inside it has a fridge, stove, sink, table, and an extra bed that folds out from the bench in the back. So cool! The only things missing that RVs have are a shower and a toilet. This makes our journey a bit more of an adventure since we’ll have to rely on the kindness of strangers when we are unable to park at a campground. We’re looking into CouchSurfing and apparently there’s a Westfalia club where members will let other members park their Westfalias in their drive-way – cool!
On Friday Steve and I went and checked out our first Westfalia! It was an hour drive away, over in Quebec. The owners were a semi-retired couple who were going to be snowbirding-it to Spain and, for that reason, had no need of a camper anymore. The camper was in amazing shape and clearly had been cared for by this lovely couple. The wife took us out for a test-drive – Steve drove the first bit, and I drove the last bit. It was surprisingly easy and smooth to drive and it was fun to be up at a higher level than I’m used to driving when I’m in the car.
Between Steve and I, I’m the more free-spirited, go-with-the-flow personality and Steve’s the more practical, lets-think-this-through kind of personality. It’s a good compliment since there are benefits and drawbacks to both. Right now this personality difference is manifesting itself in our decision of what’s next. We really liked the Westfalia we saw on Friday and there is no reason not to buy it – it’s exactly what we wanted; caveat – the couple is asking a bit more than we think it’s worth, so we would make them an offer. Steve would like to look at other options – a perfectly reasonable desire. I, on the other hand, really don’t want to lose out on this one, since it is perfect. We compromised and we are going to make the couple an offer this evening. If they refuse our offer, then we’ll keep looking and reconsider this one if we find the other options out there are lacking.
Wish us luck!
