We’re getting a new kitty!!!
We’ve been waiting for a sibling for Hobbes for a very long time.
For Christmas last year, Steve gave me a little card with a picture of a Siberian kitten, saying that we were getting a little brother for Hobbes in the Spring. For those of you who don’t know, Steve is very allergic to cats. Or was anyway. I learned this on our first date together and even though it was a deal-breaker for me, I still went on a second date with him. And likewise for him, he thought it was a deal-breaker to be with someone who couldn’t live without cats. Just when I resigned myself to never having cats again in my life, choosing true love instead, we discovered the Siberian breed of cats – a hypoallergenic breed. Steve got allergy shots for a year, just to be on the safe side, and then a month after we got married, we got Hobbes!
We were all set to have a sibling for Hobbes last Spring and then we decided to do our three month road-trip across North America. So we contacted the breeder and arranged to get a kitten from the next litter. We got news of our kitten being born while we were still on our trip – when we were in Abbotsford, B.C. with a broken down Amelia. Then a sad thing happened – all the kittens from that litter, save one, got sick and died. It was terrible terrible news and our heart went out to the breeder who tried her best to save them all. Since then we have been waiting for news of the next litter. Unfortunately it seems like the next litter won’t be born anytime soon – probably not until next Spring.
Hobbes has been needing a playmate. He whimpers at us throughout the day, letting us know that we aren’t playing with him enough (and we play with him a lot!). Siberians are an intelligent and active breed. They need to be kept busy and stimulated, more so than a lot of other breeds. So we’ve been feeling pretty bad for our lonely indoor kitty. So we made the tough call of choosing another breeder and found one who had a Siberian kitten that needed a home. The people who were supposed to take him in are an older couple and the wife just passed away of a terminal illness. The husband, understandably, was not ready to take on an active, Siberian kitten.
The breeder sent us some pictures of him. Here he is:
Isn’t he adorable?! They’ve called him Marshmallow, temporarily, but we need to come up with a name. We’ve got some ideas, but don’t want to set anything into stone until we meet the little guy. We did the same with Hobbes. Anyone have any ideas?
The breeder is all the way down in Pittsburgh, so we will be going to get him next Monday-Tuesday. I can hardly contain my excitement until then!
