Dante loves our Poppasan chair. He’s claimed it as his own. Hobbes never paid any attention to it whatsoever, hopping up on it only in pursuit of a dangling toy. It’s funny how cats will choose favourite spots. I’ve been learning a lot about cat hierarchy and behaviour in an effort to understand and help mediate the clash between our two kitties. I used to think of our whole house as one big territory that Hobbes thought was his kingdom. But actually cats divide up territories in very subtle and intriguing ways so that just our living room is a smorgasbord of tiny territories. So the poppasan chair has become Dante territory. The cat tree, so far, is exclusively Hobbes territory.
Dante uses it to scratch his imaginary claws, and the rest of the time forgets it exists.
I also found it very fascinating that cats use height as a form of hierarchy. So Hobbes’ cat tree is the highest point in our living room, indicating that at present, he is the big kahuna in our house. But even the cat tree itself can be divided up, with the highest ranking cat sleeping at the top and lower ranking cats taking the two lower levels. But we think they are so at odds with each other because they’re still establishing who is going to be the top cat around here.
I have them pretending to like each other in order to get treats. They’ll both patiently and intently lie next to each other on the bed with us at night, waiting for their next treat. We still get woken up most nights with both of them running through the room, Dante howling and Hobbes in tow, and then we end up locking them out, each to defend themselves. But I do see some small improvements!
